In January we focused on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the sun salutation and variations, and several dynamic posture flows.
In the remainder of February and March, the class will kick up this Knoxville yoga class a notch to a more vigorous pace for building core strength.
Unlike many athletic yoga classes in the area, this more vigorously paced Kripalu Yoga practice maintains focus on the breath and inner experience of the mind and emotional body, integrating the physical and the spiritual experience.
Through core-building yoga asanas (positions), participants will gain the strength needed to enter and hold inverted postures like the headstand and half shoulder-stand.
It’s important to “lift” into a headstand rather than launching the body up a wall, risking injury. This practice takes strength.
The headstand is considered “king of the postures” with many physical, mental and emotional health benefits. If you have any mood disorder (depression, etc.), OCD, ADD, endocrine disorders like diabetes or hypoglycemia, or any number of other things, you really owe it to yourself to add this to your yoga diet.
(Some conditions are contraindicated — feel free to ask for more info.)
Really it’s a simple balancing pose once you’re in it. The trick is to get into it safely, and that’s exactly what you’ll learn to do.
The class is limited to 8 people, so you’ll get plenty of help and we’ll work in pairs at times.
You’ll also be introduced to the practice of the crow pose, a fun little balancing act with plenty of variations.
So, we’re breaking with all the serious philosophy stuff and making the moderate class playtime for adults.
The class meets 7:15pm Wednesdays at Yoga Haven (12 Forest Ct.) in the upstairs studio. This series will run February 20th through March 26th (6 sessions) and costs $75. Drop-ins are $15, students/seniors $12.
