So the cat’s out of the bag that I came to yoga through dealing with bipolar disorder and addiction. I’m hesitant to share these sorts of things in class — yoga class is about the student, not the teacher. Plus there’s the rather un-yogic fear of being judged. How human of me.

Last week I won an award for my work on the topic by Psych Central, the oldest and largest online source for mental health information. My blog Yoga for Bipolar Disorder was named one of the top 10 mental health blogs on the topic of bipolar disorder for 2008.

Looking over the other winners, it’s a real honor to be included in a list of such high caliber, creative, dare I say it, genius writers.

In a nutshell, here’s how yoga helps with bipolar disorder, at least mine: It acts as a bridge to the present moment, giving me space from thoughts and feelings that can be overwhelming and are sometimes quite dark. Yoga invites compassion around the darkness and gives it expression. Yoga gives me the experience of being strong, whole, and connected.

Yoga is a way to get well rather than get better. I have had no bipolar symptoms for nearly two years, the same amount of time I have enjoyed a serious personal yoga practice. You don’t get the full benefit of yoga by attending class once or twice a week. Dive in. Go deep.

If you are a former Side Crow Yoga student from Well by Nature who has never had a Yoga with Santosh class, you may qualify to get a 50% discount, so please keep reading.

Side Crow Yoga is now part of the Glowing Body yoga studio in the Fourth and Gill area just north of downtown Knoxville. Jen and Philip, the two main Side Crow teachers, are no longer at Well by Nature.

Yoga with Santosh is still at the Well by Nature yoga studio on Bearden Hill Tuesday and Thursday evenings. So if downtown is too far to drive or you just want to give our classes a try, please stop in.

Here is a link to the yoga class schedule.

Bring an expired Side Crow Yoga class card (or just tell the front desk you were a Side Crow student) and enjoy a 50% discount on the drop-in price. That means you can take a yoga class for just $7.50, or $5 for students.

This offer is good until the end of September 2008, open to those Side Crow students who have not yet had a Yoga with Santosh class.

See you soon!

The information in this post may be out of date. See the schedule for current events.

September is “yoga month,” at least according to the good people at yogamonth.org.

Yoga month or no yoga month, September is a great time to settle back into a yoga practice after what for many may have been an erratic practice throughout the summer, what with kids out of school and trips and so on.

So, to celebrate, I’m offering a “Yoga Month” discount, which I’ll tell you more about in a moment.

First, please check out the new September class schedule.

There are a few changes in this month’s schedule. I’ll run through them for you, and I’ll keep it as short as I can:

September Nia and Yoga Classes

Sunday: You or someone you care about have multiple sclerosis? There’s a class for folks with M.S. at Baptist West, Julie and Jessi Blessinger co-teach it: Knoxville Yoga for People with Multiple Sclerosis.

The Monday class in Powell continues, offered by donation out of love, but keep your ears open for changes. Basketball season approaches, and along with it the sounds of balls dribbling and the dreaded buzzer next door in the church gym during relaxation — rest assured, we will be moving.

Julie’s Monday Nia class continues.

(Here’s what Julie says about Nia, if you’re not familiar with it: “Nia is a movement class that combines dance, martial arts, and healing arts paired with upbeat, eclectic world music. It’s an expressive, natural, and fun way of moving in bare feet.” Follow this link to find out more about her Nia classes.)

Tuesday: Moderate (at 5:30) and Vigorous (at 7:15) Kripalu Yoga classes continue at Well by Nature with me.

No classes on Wednesday.

The Thursday morning class continues to be a real pleasure, and again, it’s offered out of love. So come by and enjoy. Need directions? Let me know.

Thursday evening brings a big change. We’ve moved out of Homberg Chiropractic for the time being, though we certainly appreciate Dr. Hennie making the space available to us.

Thursdays now offer Moderate (5:30-7:00pm) and Gentle (7:15-8:45pm) Kripalu Yoga classes at Well by Nature.

No classes on Fridays are currently scheduled.

Other stuff, just quickly…

Fibromyalgia Yoga CD

If you attended the fibromyalgia workshop in March, you should have gotten your CD in the mail months ago. If you didn’t receive it, and you’re 100% sure you didn’t, let me know and I’ll send another one.

Other people who have requested the CD, please wait, I’ve made arrangements to re-record it in a real studio.

If you are interested in getting information about its release, please sign up for the newsletter at the yoga for fibromyalgia site.

I will also be recording a gentle yoga CD and a moderate yoga CD, which many of you have requested. I’m shooting to have them all on Amazon by Christmas, but you know what they say about plans.

OK, so back to so-called “Yoga Month.”

Personal Yoga Training by Donation

Recently I’ve reconsidered my individual yoga lesson policy, the outcome of which is, I’m now offering personalized sessions in my home by donation.

If you’re interested in this, let’s talk first, because it could be that there are other students who want to work on the same sorts of issues, in which case you could share a small group class. For some it’s lower back or joint issues, maybe fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, for others you’re in recovery from addictions and alcoholism, for others a need to lose more than just a little weight, anxiety and so on that may keep your specific needs from being met in regular classes, so this could be a fun way to form a community, work together, and split the cost.

Take $40 Off Your First Yoga “House Call”

I am still charging the regular fees for private lessons in your home, in your office, or at Well by Nature, but here again you’re in luck. Finally, the “yoga month” discount…

If you’re a new private student, take $40 off your first lesson this month, with no obligation to continue. You can read more about it here on my Maryville, TN yoga site. Aside from the locations listed in Blount County, the offer is good in all of Knox County, Clinton, Oak Ridge, Lenoir City, Seymour, and maybe Maynardville if you sweet-talk me. This offer is the same for a small private group class in your home, too.

New Yoga Classes and Events Coming in October

Planning ahead — in October, Julie will be teaching a series of Sivananda Yoga classes with sitting meditation on Tuesdays. The class will begin with yoga practice and end with meditation. Each week the length of time spent in meditation will increase, eventually building up to 30 minutes. This is a great opportunity to be still and practice being present. Please contact Julie at (865)405-2487 to register.

Julie will offer something new on Thursday evenings in October, too, a Yoga-Nia blend:

“Nia & Yoga blend combines the rich expression and cardiovascular benefits of Nia with the stress reducing effects of yoga. The main focus is on learning to relax body and mind, and on surrendering to the bliss that is your true Self.”

Again, it starts in October so register now by calling her at (865) 405-2487.

Also, I ran into Serene at the most recent Sangita Devi kirtan (coming again in November), and she said there were only two or three spaces left in the Yoga for Neck and Shoulders Workshop she’s hosting, so if that interests you, register now.

October 4th there’s a White Tantric Yoga 1-day meditation event here in Knoxville. It’s a Yogi Bhajan thing, don’t know much about it, but anyone I’ve talked to who’s done it says it’s good stuff.

That’s all for now. May this message find you well and happy.

Hope to see you very soon in class or in a private session, and let me know how you are.

Peace, Jai Bhagwan, Out,
David

P.S. My number is (865) 368-8773 if you want to talk about classes or personalized sessions.

Know people who would benefit from this message? Forward it to the appreciative using the email link below, but please spare the in-boxes of all the rest.

Julie and I offer as many Knoxville yoga and Nia classes by donation as we can. And there are several reasons we do so.

First, we want to make yoga accessible for you if you can’t afford $10 or $15 for a yoga class. We have both been there. If that is your current situation, please come to class anyway and give what you can. If you don’t show up for class, you don’t get any benefit, and neither do we.

Secondly, we offer classes by donation because we don’t want to stick an arbitrary monetary value on an activity that is spiritual in nature. You don’t get charged to go to church, do you? But the offering basket will almost certainly be passed your way. After all, the church has bills to pay, and so do your yoga teachers.

We also offer yoga classes in local Knoxville yoga studios that aren’t by donation, but even those have scholarships available, made possible every time someone chips a little extra into the donation basket.

Unfortunately, yoga is more and more for the well-to-do. But we believe that yoga is for anyone who wants it, it doesn’t matter what your income is, what you look like, what car you drive or what zip code you live in. As your teachers, we are deeply honored to be of service to you in your physical and spiritual journey.

Here are some common questions about yoga by donation:

Q. Is yoga by donation the same as free yoga?
A. Leading you in yoga is an honor, we give freely from the heart as a love offering, or dana. You will get most benefit from this gift if you also give freely from the heart. It doesn’t have to be money, but with a mortgage and bills and so on, that is certainly the most useful gift you could offer us. What you give or if you give is your business. Our personal experience, though, is that it’s no way to live, taking without giving.

Q. I could join a gym for what you ask for regular classes… why don’t you just lower your prices?
A. Please, join the gym. It will be great for you. We recommend the YMCA where you won’t have to sign a contract that keeps withdrawing money from your bank account even if you stop going to the gym. And most people stop going to the gym — these contracts are how gyms stay in business. But keep in mind that yoga in health clubs is often quite different from what we offer.

We don’t set one low price because we have to pay our bills. With classes by donation, some people give more, others give less, and it all works out. No contract to sign, show up when you want, pay what you want.

Q. Okay, great, but really… how much?
A. Lately donations have averaged around $7-$15 for 75 minute classes, $10-$25 for 90 minute classes, and $35-$80 for in-call private sessions. We are appreciative of any amount.

Q. What if my pride is getting in the way of coming to a donation class?
A. You may have hit something there. Swami Kripalu called nonjudgmental self-observation one of the most advanced spiritual practices. Don’t judge yourself for being human, just take a few deep breaths and get yourself to a yoga class!
